The Vampire Diaries, an American supernaturaldrama, was renewed for an eighth and final season by The CW on March 11, 2016.^[1] On July 23, 2016, The CW announced that the upcoming season would be the series' last and would consist of 16 episodes.^[2] The season premiered on October 21, 2016, and concluded on March 10, 2017.^[3]

Filming for the season began on July 20, 2016.^[39] It was announced on July 23, 2016, that season 8 of The Vampire Diaries would be the series' last and co-creator Kevin Williamson would return as a showrunner.^[40][41] Filming for the season ended on February 8, 2017.^[42]
